Thunder Bay’s Cristen Merlo is taking her diving career to the next step.

Merlo’s home club announced Friday that the Westgate student has signed an athletic/academic scholarship with Eastern Michigan University located in Ypsilanti, Mich.

She is planning on taking the Neuroscience Interdisciplinary program.  The scholarship is made of up of two portions, an athletic portion and an academic portion.

“As far as choosing a school, I talked to many different coaches about their diving programs and I did my research on each school.” said Merlo.

“I also talked to (head coach) Jason (Napper) about each one and he told me what he knew about the coaches and divers on each team.  From there, I made a pros and cons list for each school to help decide which one was a better fit for me and made a lot of phone calls to the coaches to get as much information as I could.”

Merlo has been a member of the TBDC since she was six years old.  She has represented the club and city at regional, provincial and national meets.

“I am extremely thankful for all the support that I have gotten throughout the whole recruitment process from Jason, my teammates, teachers, and friends and family.” Merlo said. “I am very excited to continue my athletic and academic career at Eastern Michigan University and I am so glad that I get this opportunity.”
